In Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district, protests by tribal families against the Ken-Betwa Link Project continue to intensify. Fearing displacement and inadequate compensation, villagers have launched a demonstration known as the "Pyre Protest."
As part of the protest, demonstrators lie on symbolic funeral pyres to express their opposition. They say they would rather die than leave their ancestral land and forests, and that they will not accept displacement without fair compensation and proper rehabilitation.
The villagers allege that many affected families have yet to receive a clear rehabilitation plan or assurance of adequate compensation. They say their livelihoods depend on farming, forests, and natural resources, and leaving these behind would create a serious livelihood crisis.
Officials, on the other hand, have stated that the affected families will receive compensation and rehabilitation in accordance with the rules. They have also said that efforts are being made to resolve the issue through dialogue with the protesters.
The Ken-Betwa Link Project is regarded as a major initiative to provide irrigation and drinking water to the Bundelkhand region. However, concerns raised by the affected villagers and tribal communities have once again intensified the debate over balancing development with displacement.
