Environmental activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk's indefinite hunger strike continued for the 13th day on Friday, July 10, 2026. His deteriorating health has become a growing concern due to the prolonged fast. According to his supporters, he has lost more than 7 kilograms in weight. A team of doctors is conducting regular health check-ups and continuously monitoring his blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and other vital health indicators.
Student leaders, teachers, lawyers, and social activists from different parts of the country have also joined Wangchuk in the protest. The protesters say they want a dialogue with the Central Government regarding their demands and have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and initiate talks at the earliest. However, no formal announcement of talks has been made by the government so far.
Meanwhile, Sonam Wangchuk has announced a peaceful march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament in New Delhi on July 20 as the next phase of the movement. He has appealed to citizens, youth, and social organisations across the country to participate in the march and raise their voices through democratic means.
The ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar is receiving support from several student organisations, social activists, and civil society groups. The protesters say the government should seriously consider their demands and begin dialogue at the earliest. Meanwhile, the Central Government has not yet issued any detailed official statement on the matter.
With Sonam Wangchuk's health continuing to deteriorate and the announcement of the Parliament march, political and social discussions around the movement have intensified. Attention is now focused on whether the government will initiate dialogue with the protesters or whether the movement will expand further.
