Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has created major political pressure in Tamil Nadu. According to reports, if rival parties Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) come together to form the government, all 108 MLAs of TVK could submit their resignations collectively.

The development has intensified political uncertainty in the state following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. TVK emerged as the single largest party but failed to secure a complete majority. In the 234-member assembly, 118 seats are required for a majority, while TVK currently holds 108 seats. Even with Congress support, the party remains short of the required numbers.

Governor Seeks Proof of Majority

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has reportedly asked parties to submit letters of support for government formation. Vijay has met the Governor twice to stake claim to form the government.

Resort Politics Begins

Amid political uncertainty, AIADMK has reportedly shifted its MLAs to a resort in Puducherry amid fears of defections or political negotiations with rival parties. Party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami also held meetings with legislators to discuss future strategy.

DMK Denies Alliance Rumors

DMK chief M. K. Stalin has denied reports of any possible alliance with AIADMK. However, political speculation regarding a potential understanding between the two major parties continues.

What Could Happen Next?

If TVK fails to prove its majority, the Governor may have several options:

Invite another alliance to form the government

Order a floor test

Recommend President’s Rule

Or call for fresh elections

Political analysts believe that if TVK MLAs resign collectively, Tamil Nadu could face a serious constitutional and political crisis.
