PM Surya Ghar Yojana: Rooftop Solar Expansion to Accelerate ate in Bihar, Subsidy for Homes

Patna: Preparations are underway to accelerate the installation of solar power systems on rooftops across Bihar. Under the Centre's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, rooftop solar is being promoted in the state. The government's aim is to connect more families with solar energy and provide relief from electricity expenses.

Focus on Solar Energy in Bihar

Work is also underway in Bihar to take rooftop solar to low-income families through the Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model. Under this initiative, approval has been given to install 1.1-kilowatt grid-connected solar systems at the homes of around 2.5 lakh Kutir Jyoti consumers. The project is linked to a capacity of around 275 MW.

Major Subsidy from the Centre

Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, the central government provides financial assistance for installing rooftop solar systems at residential properties. As per the current provisions, central assistance of ₹30,000 is available for a 1-kilowatt system, ₹60,000 for 2 kilowatts and up to ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kilowatts or more.

The scheme also provides low-interest, collateral-free loan facilities for economically weaker and middle-income families.

Scheme's Reach Expanding Across the Country

According to the central government, as of July 22, 2026, around 39.72 lakh rooftop solar systems had been installed across the country under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, covering approximately 48.03 lakh families. The scheme aims to take rooftop solar to one crore households.

How Will Bihar Families Benefit?

By installing rooftop solar, families will be able to meet part of their electricity requirements through their own solar power system. This can help reduce electricity bills. If excess electricity is generated, beneficiaries may also have the option of supplying it to the grid and gaining benefits as per applicable rules.

The expansion of solar energy projects in Bihar is being viewed as an important step towards clean energy and reducing electricity costs in the state.
