Bahuda Yatra 2026: Celebration of Lord Jagannath’s Return, Know the Tradition and Religious Significance

Puri (Odisha): The world-famous Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra reaches its final and important phase with Bahuda Yatra 2026. It is the sacred occasion when Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister Goddess Subhadra begin their return journey from Gundicha Temple to their main abode, Shri Jagannath Temple. The word Bahuda itself means “the return journey”.

What is the Tradition of Bahuda Yatra?

During the Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath, along with his brother and sister, travels from Shri Mandir to Gundicha Temple on three grand chariots. After staying there for a few days, the return journey of the deities is organised, which is known as Bahuda Yatra. Devotees consider it an auspicious occasion when the Lord returns to his original abode.

The Return of the Lord on Three Chariots

The same three chariots that carried the deities during the Rath Yatra are used in the Bahuda Yatra. Lord Jagannath’s chariot is called Nandighosha, Lord Balabhadra’s chariot is known as Taladhwaja, and Goddess Subhadra’s chariot is called Darpadalana. Thousands of devotees participate in the journey by pulling the ropes of these sacred chariots.

Special Tradition at Mausi Maa Temple

During the return journey, Lord Jagannath’s chariot stops for some time near Mausi Maa Temple. According to religious belief, a special offering called Poda Pitha is presented to the Lord at this place. After this ritual, the journey continues towards the destination.

Religious Significance

It is believed that Bahuda Yatra is not only the return of the Lord but also an opportunity for devotees to receive divine blessings. This festival conveys the message of devotion, equality, and social unity. During this period, lakhs of devotees visit Puri to have the darshan of Lord Jagannath and experience spiritual devotion.

Completion of Rath Yatra and Further Rituals

After the Bahuda Yatra, Lord Jagannath returns to his main temple. Following traditions, special decorations and other religious rituals are performed, in which a large number of devotees participate.
