Fire Breaks Out in Amravati District Women's Hospital NICU, Three Newborns Dead; Six in Critical Condition
Amravati, August 24, 2026: A fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the District Women's Hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra, early Monday morning, killing three newborn babies. At the time of the incident, 39 newborns were undergoing treatment in the ward. The incident created panic inside the hospital.
Incident Took Place Around 3:30 AM
According to the information available, the fire broke out at around 3:30 AM in the NICU located on the third floor of the hospital. Initial information suggests that the fire may have been caused by a technical malfunction in a ventilator or thermal unit. However, the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Hospital Staff Launched Rescue Operation
As soon as the fire was reported, doctors, nurses and hospital staff immediately began the rescue operation. The children were taken out of the affected section and moved to a safe location. According to officials, nine babies present in the affected room were evacuated, but three newborns could not be saved.
Six Newborns Admitted to Another Hospital
Six newborns who were seriously affected in the incident have been shifted to a nearby super-speciality hospital for treatment. According to officials, the deceased babies died due to severe burn injuries and the effects of smoke.
