Delhi Building Collapse: Five-Storey Building Collapses in Satya Niketan, 6 Dead; 11 Rescued

New Delhi: A five-storey building suddenly collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday. Six people have so far been confirmed dead in the incident, while 11 people have been safely rescued from the debris. The building was being used as a paying guest (PG) accommodation for students. Repair work was also underway in the building at the time of the incident.

The incident reportedly took place at around 1:30 pm on Sunday. As soon as the building collapsed, panic spread in the surrounding area, and people rushed to the spot to help those trapped under the debris. After receiving information, teams of the Delhi Police, Fire Department and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the site and began the rescue operation.

Building Was 40–50 Years Old

According to the preliminary police investigation, the building was around 40 to 50 years old. It had a basement along with five floors. Repair-related work was reportedly underway in the basement when the incident occurred. Investigating agencies are trying to determine what role the construction or repair work may have played in the building’s collapse.

Rescue Teams Worked to Free Those Trapped

After the building collapsed, there were concerns that people might be trapped under the debris, prompting a continuous rescue operation. Rescue teams carefully removed the debris. According to officials, 11 people were pulled out and taken to hospital. One person was rescued during the operation but died after being taken to hospital, taking the death toll to six.

FIR Against PG Owner

In connection with the incident, police have registered a case against the building owner, Hariram. Action has been taken under sections related to negligence and culpable homicide. The investigation is also examining the condition of the building, the repair work and whether construction-related rules were followed.

Chief Minister Orders Probe

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site and took stock of the relief and rescue operations. The government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Following the collapse, questions have also been raised about the safety of old buildings being used as accommodation for students and the need for their structural audits.

Questions Raised Over Safety of Old Buildings

The Satya Niketan area and its surroundings are known for having a large number of students and young people living in PG accommodations. The incident has therefore raised questions about the monitoring of repair and construction work in old buildings. The administration is now examining whether the prescribed safety standards were followed while the work was being carried out.

At present, rescue and investigation-related proceedings are continuing. The investigation report is awaited to determine the exact cause of the collapse and fix responsibility.
