Uttarakhand Earthquake: Earth Shakes at 4.2 Magnitude in Uttarkashi, Tremors Also Felt in Tehri; People Step Out of Their Homes at Night

Dehradun: People in Uttarakhand were alarmed after earthquake tremors struck late at night. Seismic activity was recorded in Uttarkashi and Tehri Garhwal districts. The earthquake in Uttarkashi measured 4.2 in magnitude, while a lighter tremor of 2.0 magnitude was recorded in Tehri Garhwal.

4.2 Magnitude Tremor Hits Uttarkashi

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake measuring 4.2 in magnitude was recorded in Uttarkashi district at around 1:21 am. The epicentre of the earthquake was reported around the Rajgarhi area near Barkot tehsil. The depth of the quake was approximately 10 kilometres below the ground.

As strong tremors were felt, people in several areas connected to the Yamuna and Ganga valleys of Uttarkashi became frightened and stepped out of their homes. The sudden shaking during the night created an atmosphere of panic for some time.

Earth Trembles in Tehri Too

After Uttarkashi, tremors were also felt in Tehri Garhwal district. A 2.0-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Kirtinagar and Ghansali areas. Its depth was reported to be around 5 kilometres.

No Damage Reported

Following the tremors, people contacted their relatives and acquaintances over the phone to check on their well-being. The administration also gathered preliminary information about the situation. Thankfully, no loss of life, property or damage to infrastructure has been reported so far from either district due to the earthquakes.

Himalayan Region Sensitive to Earthquakes

A large part of Uttarakhand is considered seismically sensitive. Several areas of the state fall under zones with a high level of seismic risk, due to which earthquake tremors are felt here from time to time.

Amid rain and landslide concerns, the earthquake tremors have also increased the administration's alertness. People have been advised to remain cautious instead of panicking and not to believe in rumours.

The situation is currently reported to be normal, and the administration is keeping a close watch on the situation.
