Indian Railways has decided to implement several new rules from July 1 to improve passenger safety and enhance the overall travel experience. Under the revised provisions, stricter action will be taken against passengers found smoking, unauthorized hawkers, beggars, and those travelling without tickets. Penalties for several violations have also been increased significantly.

Smoking on Trains May Attract a Fine of Up to ₹2,000

Passengers caught smoking inside trains or anywhere on railway premises may now face a fine of up to ₹2,000. Railway officials may also confiscate the offender’s ticket and remove them from the train. If the individual refuses to pay the fine, the matter may be taken to court, where the penalty can increase to ₹5,000.

Crackdown on Unauthorized Hawkers

Indian Railways will also take stricter action against hawkers selling goods in sleeper and general coaches without valid permission. Such offenders may face a ₹2,000 fine. Failure to pay the fine could lead to a court-imposed penalty of up to ₹5,000 and imprisonment for up to three months. Repeat offenders may face imprisonment of up to one year.

Begging at Railway Stations to Face Strict Action

Begging inside trains and on railway premises will also be dealt with more strictly. Violators may face similar penalties as unauthorized hawkers, and railway authorities may remove them from trains and station premises.

Higher Penalty for Ticketless Travel

Indian Railways has increased the minimum fine for travelling without a valid ticket from ₹250 to ₹500. The move aims to discourage ticketless travel and improve passenger services across the railway network.

Advisory for Passengers

Railway authorities have urged passengers to follow all rules during their journey and avoid activities such as smoking, unauthorized vending, begging, and travelling without a ticket to ensure a safe, clean, and orderly travel experience for everyone.
